Choosing Gear For Your Scuba Island Vacation

So you got your certification, have done a few local dives and have even planned your first scuba island vacation. You’ve chosen your destination, have your dive card in hand and are ready to board your plane. One last thing to consider is what to take with you on your dive trip. Whether you already own your own gear or are thinking to purchase new gear, this is a decision everyone must make before heading to the airport.

Scuba Island or deserted Island

The first thing to consider is the location or scuba island you have chosen as your destination. Is it a common location for divers where there is a number of dive shops with decent gear that is serviced on a regular basis? What type of gear are they using? Though it gets said a lot, this is life support equipment. I have used some rental equipment that is kept in great shape, but I have also seen equipment that is low quality, old, and rarely serviced. If the information is not on the shops website, e-mail or call them (Skype makes this very cheap and easy) and ask them what type of rental gear they use, how often it was serviced, and if it was serviced by some one qualified to do the work. Having done service work on scuba equipment for over 7 years, I can say that poorly serviced equipment can be as bad if not worse than non serviced equipment. If they are unsure or hesitant to answer then it is not a good sign.

If you are unsatisfied with the equipment available at the destination, but are not ready to purchase gear then you might look at renting from your local dive shop. There is a better chance (though no guarantee) that this equipment is serviced on a regular basis. Always be sure to test the equipment before heading off for your trip.

Light or Functional

For those of your who want to take your own gear, there are a number of options to choose from and this article certainly isn’t long enough to cover them all. I will focus on whether or not to choose some of the lighter or travel options available. When considering products designed for travel (especially those that compromise other features) it is important to think of your needs. If you only travel once or twice a year and most of your diving is local, then I would recommend choosing gear with the features you need over the equipment designed for travelers. If most of your trips are require traveling, then some of the lighter gear may be of some benefit.

Regulator- Though there are a number of regulators made from lightweight materials like titanium or aluminum that are designed for travel, they are generally not worth it. Unless you have the money to burn, the price difference is just to great. They are also more prone to damage and require greater care than the standard regulators.

Dive Computer- I consider a diver computer a must for traveling. Not only does it allow you to maximize your dive time it also allows you to spend time enjoying your vacation rather than doing calculations. I prefer a console over a wrist mount so it is attached to my regulator (one less thing to lose), but some people prefer the latter. Weight wise they will be about the same so choose the one with the features you want

BC- The BC is actually an item you want to consider choosing a light and streamline version. This is actually true regardless of the diving that you are planning to do. If you find a well designed BC you don’t really have to compromise. Weight integration is a must as it makes things simpler when traveling. Focus on a choosing a BC that is streamlined and also that packs small.

Wetsuit- Choosing a wetsuit can be somewhat difficult and depending on how often and where you dive you may need a few. Most thin wetsuits will not take up much space, so choose the one that you feel the most comfortable with. I would also like to note that there is a big difference in quality, so keep that in mind when comparing prices.

Snorkeling equipment- There are masks and snorkels that are designed for traveling. However, I have yet to see one that really saves that much space. Since the mask is your most important piece of equipment, choose the one that fits you best. If you are doing mostly warm water diving, then I actually do recommend that you purchase full-foot fins. They are not only much lighter and don’t require booties, they are also more efficient.

Dive bag- I recommend bringing two. One travel bag for the plain and trip and one large mesh bag for your daily dives. There are a number of options out there, and after making a couple of wrong choices I learned a lot about the features I wanted. The first thing to consider is to get a bag that is lightweight yet durable. With airlines constantly lowering the weight limits you don’t want your dive bag taking up half the limit. However, it should also be durable. Since it will get tossed around through airports, buses, taxis, and maybe more; I also recommend that all pockets are on the inside of he bag. if it has outside pockets, then they should be streamlined. Fitting within the airline size limits and roller wheels are also musts. One other thing to check is to make sure it will stand up on it’s own when full. You don’t want to hold it up all the time.

As a last note, if you are planning to purchase gear, do your research and find a reputable shop. It should be a fun experience and don’t get pressured into something you don’t want or need.

Enjoy your scuba island vacation.

I have been scuba diving for over ten years and worked in the industry for over 7 years. The majority of my diving has been on the California coast, but also includes warm water locations such as Mexico and Japan. I started The Scuba Island: http://www.thescubaisland.com/ as a way to try and offer some of the information I gained and to keep learning myself.

Italy - One of the 10 Best Places to Retire in the World

If there is one country that gives France a tough competition, as to offering retirement homes to well-to-do foreign pensioners-it is the Italian Republic. Many consider it one of the best places to live and retire. Let’s find out more about Italy.

This 116,346.5 sq mi European nation, like France, has perfectly combined architectural beauty with the Roman Catholic religion, such the St. Peter’s Basilica, and should be in their “places must visit” list.

Usually, it is during this time, when one hits retirement age, that a person would have more spare time on his hands. He would reminisce or reflect on the years that have gone by. It is usually the time when one would have to desire to reconnect with their spiritual side.

Italy, especially its capital Rome, is just buzzing with priests and other religious clergy and maybe it would be easier to find a clergyman here than any part of the world. What am I thinking, of course men of the cloth would be found everywhere, this is their city - even the Pope lives here!

I’m afraid that Italy’s retirement plan is not for everyone. It mostly caters to the semi-rich and semi-famous people to the absolutely rich and famous bracket of society because the prices of property in some regions are expensive. A 968-square-foot apartment in Moteleone d’Orvieto that has two bedrooms and one bathroom, which by the way requires restoration, is being sold for US$85,000.

While a 430 square feet second floor apartment at the Calabrian seaside town of Scalea can be bought for US$100,000. Only former top executives of multi-national companies would be able to afford these rates.

But when you do decide to move to Italy, I don’t think you would feel like you are “out of place”. I read somewhere that Italy is experiencing a “graying” population or that there are more elderly people around. So finding friends and sharing common interests like playing golf or a game of chess would definitely not be a problem.

Italy, particularly Rome, is one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Just look at the Colosseum and remember the times when chariot races and fights among gladiators were the main entertainment.

In 2006, this country also ranks as having the seventh largest economy in the world. So since its economy is thriving it can be expected that most hospitals would be well-equipped and would have top of the line medical services.

Italy was once home to world renowned masters of the visual art such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Donatello and Raphael, and literary figures such as Dante Alighieri, Petrarch, and Niccolo Machiavelli. If they could live in Italy, then why not you?

Italy is just one of the 10 best places to retire in the world, find out the other 9 at http://www.bestplacesretire.com/

The Challenges of a Retired Life

Retirement is inevitable. It comes to every individual at one point of time. The real trick is to be able to manage your retired life, without becoming a burden or an irritant to others around you. Retirement can be planned if you are a prudent individual. Prior to retirement , the most important task is to identify your work skills in a work area that could be the same as you are now working or a different field altogether. Scientists researching on Brain-related disorders like Alzheimers, Short Term Memory Loss and a host of other similar abnormalities, have found that if the brain is always kept engaged in some sort of activities, then the chances of the onset of the above disorders can be prevented to some extent, if not altogether. That is why one has to find a job or something to do after retirement. The job need not be for generating income, although any income would be welcome.

Keeping yourself fit and healthy is the next important thing. Timely checkups and visits to the doctor would help you to keep your BP, BloodSugar and other parameters under check.

Keeping track of your finances and making intelligent investments is another vital area. One must ensure that at the time of retirement, liabilities are kept to a minimum and the entire retirement investments are made to earn such interest income so as to meet your living expenses fully.

Children education, living expenses and provisioning for unforeseen, emergency expenses all should come out of the interest or return rather than the principal.

Practice a frugal life style. Eat low calorie food, exercise regularly, keep yourself engaged in activities related to the brain and then your retired life shall be one of pleasure rather than pain. Never fish for compliments or crave for attention from others. Never allow yourself to be depressed. Engage in diversions and other activities. Learn to mingle with people of your age and upbringing or learn to find happiness in being alone.

Others around would respect you as a retired person if you do not tend to offer free advice and meddlel with their affairs.

Take care and enjoy your retired life!

Scuba Diving Certification - What You Need to Do Before You Go Looking For Nemo

So you are thinking about getting your scuba diving certification but aren’t sure what it entails? We’ll go through the details here. Scuba diving is a wonderful sport and you will be able to enjoy it for many years to come. There’s nothing like floating effortlessly underwater and seeing all the beautiful fish, coral, wrecks, etc. Certification will open up a whole new world for you.

First, let’s start with the basics. What exactly is scuba diving certification?

In order to go scuba diving with any reputable dive shop, you must have a certification card (more commonly known as a c-card). You obtain this card by taking and passing a dive certification course. Once you pass this course, you receive your c-card and you are good to go.

The two main certification agencies are PADI and NAUI. Other agencies, such as YMCA and SSI, also offer scuba diving certification but NAUI and PADI are the most widely recognized.

The dive shop (or other entity) that you take your training from will be affiliated with one of these agencies. That is who you will receive your card from.

The most common scuba diving certification for recreational divers is the open water diver. Once you finish this course and pass the tests and dives, you receive your c-card. Once you receive your card, you are certified for life. There is no other mandatory training. There is other optional training you can do, but nothing more is required before you can start diving.

What are the requirements for taking a certification course?

As far as age goes, for PADI you must be 10 or older to take the course. Students younger than 15 will receive the PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification. It can then be upgraded to PADI Open Water Diver certification upon reaching 15. For Naui, you must be 12 or older to take the course.

Basically you should be in good physical shape and be comfortable in the water. A clearance from your doctor would be a good idea if you have any doubts.

During the course you will have to be able to swim 200 yards. However, you can use any stroke and there is no time limit on how long it takes. You also have to tread water or float for 10 minutes. Again, you can use any methods you want.

The course itself can be broken into 4 major segments:

1. Book work

2. Exams

3. Pool training

4. Open water dives

The amount of time it takes to get our scuba diving certification depends on what avenue you take. There are intensive weekend courses where you can do all your book work and pool work in one weekend. This option usually involves advance reading. I think this could be a bit overwhelming if you have no prior experience but many people opt for this route.

At the opposite end are the options where you meet over the course of several weeks to do your book and pool work. This is the option I chose. The class met once a week for 6 weeks. The first part of the night involved the classroom (about 1 1/4 hours) followed by pool work (about 1 1/2 hours).

A recent introduction are the on-line certification courses which allows you to do the book portion of your scuba diving certification from anywhere.

You get a referral to do your open water dives after you successfully complete the book and pool work. Your open water dives are usually done in a lake, quarry or ocean. You typically do these dives over the course of 2 days. Certification usually requires 4 or 5 successful open water dives. You also have to do your open water dives within a certain amount of time of receiving your referral.

During your open water dives, you will perform the skills you learned in class for the instructor. This involves such skills as clearing your mask, buddy breathing, etc. Once you successfully pass the open water dives, you will receive your c-card.

As far as the cost of certification, prices for the course and pool work portion can range anywhere from around $150 to several hundred. I think $200-$250 is probably about average. If you take book portion online through PADI, the course currently costs $120 (you still have to pay for your in water training and open water dive portions).

Adding in the cost of your open water dives, the total cost of dive certification will probably be about $350-$450.

Hopefully I have answered most of your questions about getting certified. Give it a try, you won’t regret it!

Holidays in Bulgaria

Is it your first time going to Bulgaria on holiday? Check out our guide to Bulgaria, which will give you an idea of the country, its inhabitants, geography and sights not to miss.

West of the nation of Bulgaria is the capital city of Sofia, possessing 1.2 million residents, making it the most heavily populated region in this nation. A short drive of less than ninety minutes takes you to the southern mountain ranges where the beauty of the land becomes evident. Towering over the area are the just under 3,000m snowcapped peaks of Rila and Pirin. (Just under 10,000 feet)The mountains that comprise the country’s most popular skiing and hiking are also home to Europe’s most blistering 216°F mineral spring. (215.6° F) (however, it is sad but true that none of these are used well).

The Rhodope range lies east of Rila and Pirin with river gorges and valleys covered in virgin forest, dotted throughout with mountain villages. Bulgaria is a region that is best travelled by car so you take in and enjoy its’ breathtaking beauty.

With Sofia to the West, the softly undulating Sredna Gora and Balkan mountains go through central Bulgaria and are the source of the of the northern region’s Danubian plains. (which has no genuine attractions), the Valley of the Kings beckoning beyond the southern slopes. (aka the Valley of Roses, because of the famous roses that produce some of the best-quality attar in the world). Kananluk is not the official capital of Plovdiv Valley, but it is the unofficial capital. (population: 340 thousand)A superior base can be found in Bulgaria’s number two largest city, one with a striking historical center.

Las Vegas Has it All

Once upon a time Las Vegas was just a town to gamble in and to party all night and/or weekend. Well, this 24 hour town has grown up and now offers something for everyone, many people come here and never put one cent in the slot machines or gaming tables.

Golfing is the best and tee times are plentiful, the courses are gorgeous and well designed. There are even destination resorts with all of the amenities and away from the hustle and bustle of the strip and/or downtown.

Shows and entertainment abound on and off the strip, one recommendation though, if you plan on taking in a show be sure and book your show before you leave home and well in advance. The shows book fast and if you wait until you arrive, chances are you won’t get to see the one you have your heart set on.

Gourmet restaurants are all over town, some of the best cuisine is now found in Las Vegas, again reservations are a must, but well worth that extra effort before you leave home.

All of these reservations can be made thru your personal travel website right in the comfort of your home and the great thing about a personal travel website is that there is a actual person you can contact if you need assistance.

Into sightseeing and possibly doing outdoor activities, yes, Las Vegas has that also. Lake Mead is a short drive and there is off roading and sky diving for the adventurous.

Make your plans and reservations, pack your bags and head to Las Vegas for a weekend, a long weekend or your weeks vacation, there is something there for everyone.
