Getting to Croatia - A Visitors Guide

Croatia is a beautiful country in Southern Europe. It possesses a fascinating history and is home to some of the most stunning sights in the world. The local culture will also impress you. Moreover, it is a shopping haven. It is quite easy to get to Croatia. Visitors have a choice of traveling by air, train or bus.

By Air - Croatia has several airports. Some cater to mainly domestic and regional flights, while others are more international. The busier airports include Dubrovnik Airport, Pula Airport, Split Airport, Zada Airport and Zaghreb Airport. Croatia is quite accessible by plane. If you are from places such as Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Madrid, Milan, Moscow, Paris, Munch, Prague and Rome, you should be able to catch a flight to Croatia quite easily. Visitors can also take Ryanair to Triest, Italy, before taking a bus to Croatia. This is quite a popular travel option. Whatever it is, be sure to choose the airline that best suits your needs in terms of location and cost. Be sure to confirm which airport your flight will be landing at.

By Train - There are both direct and indirect train routes to Croatia. If you are from countries such as Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, Italy or Greece, you will be able to take a direct train line to the major Croatian cities. If you are from any other European country, you can still travel to Croatia using an indirect train route. The main railway providers are EuroCity and Intercity. They provide different routes and their tickets are priced differently. Many visitors prefer to take the train as it gives them the opportunity to travel in leisure and to enjoy the beautiful sights and scenes along the way. Moreover, it is a less expensive form of travelling compared to taking a flight.

By Bus - If you are coming from Italy, Bosnia, Montenegro, Hungary or Austria, you may want to reach Croatia by bus. There are two daily buses from Venice that will land you in Pula. It is a five hour journey with pit stops in Trieste and Rovinj. As for the other locations, there are both local and daily buses. The journeys all have pit stops, and you will find the service to be quite efficient as you do not have to leave the bus to pass the border. Immigration officials will board the bus to check your passports, and this involves minimum fuss.

The Perfect Vacation Cottage

If you are looking to purchase a place where you can simply get away from the world on your own little vacation, then look no further than a beautiful cottage. A cottage is a perfect place for you to spend your vacations. Cottages are smaller than regular homes, and therefore require less in the amount of up keep. Cottages also tend to have those special touches built right into the floor plan. You might just find a special niche or nook that you would enjoy curling up in the sunlight to read your favorite books. The location and size of cottages make these homes ideal for someone looking to purchase a vacation home.

One of the many benefits of purchasing an older cottage as your vacation home is that the odds are that it was built with a spectacular view. Most cottage houseplans seem to be built on a lake’s edge or ocean shore. There could be nothing more relaxing than sitting and watching the sunrise or sunset. Also, if you are the more active type, many cottages are also built into the vast wilderness lending themselves to a place perfect for hiking and possibly fishing. No matter what your passion is, the natural surroundings of any cottage will likely bring a sincere relaxation to your entire body. In addition to having spectacular views to enjoy, a cottage is also immersed in privacy.

Another benefit of cottages would simply be their size. Most cottage style house plans are on a smaller scale. If you are shopping for a cottage, the odds are good that the house is only one and a half stories. This small size can be perfect for the couple who likes to get away on their own. This is also great for an independent person who just wants to spend the weekend alone. Having a cottage on the smaller side for a vacation home makes the up keep so much easier. There is less space that needs to be cleaned which means more time for relaxing. A smaller home just makes so much more sense as a vacation home. A smaller home means a cozier feeling with many different areas in which you can simply sit and enjoy your surroundings.

If you do choose to purchase a cottage vacation home, you will not regret your decision! Cottages are a great way to have that escape that you may desire so easily within reach. Although the cottage may or may not be far away from where you live, once you arrive at the cottage you will like you are on another planet. Your personal escape to your cottage will be exactly what you are looking for. With so many cottage home plans available, you are likely to find the cottage that will be perfect for you.

If you are looking into cottage homes, be sure to click on http://www.houseplansandmore.com today. They have a wide selection of cottage style house plans and cottage home plans available. House Plans and More also has a variety of cottage houseplans.

Bangkok Apartments

While visiting the beautiful location of Bangkok you should consider a Bangkok apartment instead of staying in a hotel. These apartments are the next thing to being in your own home.

The Bangkok apartment is also a very affordable choice with studio apartments as low as $12.00 per day and penthouse suites with two bedrooms and two bathrooms for as little as $50.00 per day. This is a much cheaper option with many more amenities and you can rent them by the day or by the month.

Your Bangkok apartment will be fully furnished and most will offer you satellite television, laundry service, and 24 hour security. You will have plenty of room to relax and enjoy your stay without the feeling of a cramped hotel. Some will even offer you internet service so you can keep up with all of the news from home.

Many of the Bangkok apartments offer mini marts where you can grab a quick snack or some of the necessities you forgot to bring with you. There is no need to get out and travel to another location when you will find everything you need under one roof.

Some apartment complexes offer hair salons which is always something the ladies enjoy. Perhaps you have a big evening planned and she wants her hair to look its best. Being in a strange area she will not know which hairdresser to choose. This way she will not even have to leave the premises to get a beautiful style and be ready for a great night out on the town.

If you search for a Bangkok apartment which is centrally located you will find that you have access to all of the attractions the city has to offer. You will be within minutes of great shopping, entertainment, and close to the Skytrain station that will take you where you want to go. You will also find big supermarkets where you can shop for some great food items just in case you decide you want to spend an evening relaxing at home.

Regardless of the reason for your visit, you will find that a Bangkok apartment offers you a great alternative to the hotel room. You will have much more room and the same amount of services at your disposal.

Yangshuo China - A Travelers Gem

Since many years, Yangshuo is considered to be a travelers gem. Even in the ears that China was a closed country and few, if any were able to travel in China, Yangshuo was the exception. In the early 80’s, when traveling in China was almost like traveling to Mars, there were only a few areas for tourism opened. Most of those areas you had to travel with an official Chinese guide, who usually spoke little English and told you no more then the official story, written by the the Chinese Communist Party.

When I first visited China in the mid 90’s, tourism was rapidly increasing. There were still plenty of officially closed areas but there were also plenty of options to travel independent through the country. Booking a train ticket or obtain a bus ticket could be a real challenge. I remember Hezhou, not far from Xiahe in north China where I could only obtain a bus ticket if I had a Chinese Insurance, but to obtain such an insurance you needed to hand over a bus ticket, proving you were traveling in that area.

Those days are over. China nowadays is just as difficult, or as easy to travel as any other Asian country. That is, of course, if you do your homework. One thing many travelers underestimate are the distances. Flying from west to east China take 3 hours, north to south, around 1.5 to 2 hours. So planning is essential.

Yangshuo is such an area that shows up on my “to be visited areas in China”. It’s not for nothing. There are few places in China, even in the world more scenic then Yangshuo.

The limestone mountains of Yangshuo

I have said it before, and I repeat it here: “If paradise have existed, it might very well have been here in Yangshuo”. Of course there are plenty of other wonderful and magic areas to visit but Yangshuo has without a doubt one of the most famous and spectacular limestone karst rock formations.

Yangshuo is located in south China, about 600 km north west of Guangzhou and Hong Kong. With an international airport in Guilin, Yangshuo, at 66 km from Guilin is now easily accessible to the rest of the world. The Guilin airport has direct connections to Hong Kong and Bangkok amongst other international airports.

While flying in from the Hong Kong direction you might already get a glimpse of the limestone mountains. The airport, located west of Guilin city is also the north west border of the limestone mountain area. Traveling by taxi from the airport to Guilin gives you already an intro to what you will see later on.

The way to Yangshuo

There are two ways you can travel to Yangshuo from Guilin. One goes over land, the other via the Li Jiang river. Personally I like the river cruise, because that is what it is, as an entrance to Yangshuo. The start of the cruise is nothing much. But after some time the landscape gets more and more spectacular until it reaches its summit in Xingping where boats have a stop and you can enjoy a drink in one of the restaurants.

This doesn’t mean the last part of the river to Yangshuo, another 20km or so, is not interesting. Contrary. This part is beautiful and I can recommend it in any season although, obviously in the summer months, when beautiful clear weather it’s spectacular.

The road from Guilin to Yangshuo does not offer such spectacular sights, thus many people decide to come through the river and leave via the road.

There is another way to come to Yangshuo, from the south. Hong Kong and Guangzhou are not too far, a night bus ride away. The old road from Guangzhou to Wuzhou and then north to Yangshuo is no longer so much in use but it is a very nice and partly scenic road. However, as many travelers from Guangzhou or Hong Kong come with night buses, they won’t see much of the scenery anyway. The newer road is much more scenic. Cyclists travel this road too but it’s a busier road. There are several towns with some very scenic areas though nothing comes close to Yangshuo.

Travelers from south China, Nanning and Liuzhou usually take the express bus or the train to Guilin but there’s another road, crossing the hills and come just south of Yangshuo together in Lipu. Cyclist usually take 2 days from Liuzhou to Yangshuo this way. There are sleeper buses doing this journey but it’s slow and unpleasant.

The limestone mountains

Most people come for two reasons to Yangshuo: see the limestone rock formations and do some cycling, hiking, rockclimbing or other outdoor activities here. Moonhill is one of the most famous and most visited rocks in the area. It’s located at the main road some kilometers south of Yangshuo town center. But there’s plenty more to see.

Take a raft just north of Moonhill and drift westwards with the limestone mountains on both sides. More serene you can not get it. Or go to Xingping, another spectacular area with plenty of opportunities for rock climbing and hiking. But the best way is simply to take a bicycle and cycle in the area. With of without a guide, you will find small villages where time seems to have stand still.

Others come simply here to hang out, enjoy a westernized piece of China, where bread, coffee and pizza together with plenty of Chinese speaking English make life easy. True, in China these days there are more places where you find these western things. Yangshuo still has the name as a backpackers paradise and it’s still worth the visit for a couple of days.

Sitiawan was the perfect place to write a website about Pangkor island, a small island on the Malaysian west coast. Later he wrote http://www.bicycle-adventures.com, an ongoing project about his journeys on bicycles. A third website: http://www.yangshuo-travel-guide.com he recently build. In the years in China, he lived in Yangshuo and he thinks he can tell the story about this pretty little town in China.

Exploring Virginia’s Wineries

Did you know that Virginia has some excellent wineries? Whether you’re an avid wine enthusiast or just looking for a fun activity for the day, Virginia has many great wineries to explore. From Blue Ridge Vineyard to Conoran Vineyard, there’s an enjoyable time to be had.

While there are many wineries to explore in Virginia, I will give a few good ones to start your journey. At the end of this article, I’ve put a link to a Web page that has more details about Virginia wine tourism. The two vineyards mentioned in this article are great, but there are plenty more vineyards in Virginia to explore.

Afton Mountain Vineyards

Time helps wine improve as does experience in making it. Afton Mountain Vineyards are more than experience in the art of winemaking. It’s one of the first farm wineries in Virginia.

You’ll find Afton Mountain Vineyards in Central Virginia. Appropriately, it’s located on 234 Vineyard Lane.

Their wines have received recognition both at home and abroad. Afton Mountain Vineyards has won awards at many competitions worldwide. Thankfully, their wine tasting room is open throughout the year. There’s never a bad time to visit and enjoy the fare and the wine. You can even make an appointment. Their hours fluctuate, but 10am - 5pm is the norm. And they’re closed on major holidays.

Farfelu Vineyards and Winery((

Moving right along, we stop at Farfelu Vineyards and Winery. As with Afton Mountain Vineyards, they’ve been at winemaking for quite some time. In fact, Farfelu is Virginia’s first winery.

The vineyard sits on an 86-acre beautiful estate. The tasting room is interesting in itself. They created it from a 1800s dairy barn. How’s that for ambiance? The estate also has an expansive deck that overlooks the vineyard.

Want more than just wine? Farfelu has a lovely picnic area and activities, such as bocce ball (very fun), volleyball, and horseshoes-and a river hiking trail. You might say that they have it all.

Located about 60 miles west of Washington, D.C., Farfelu can be found on 13058 Crest Hill Road. Plan to spend a little time here.

Farfelu produces lovely wines, including an award-winning Chardonnay (who says Chardonnay is best in California?), Cabernet Franc, Viogner and Muse, which a Bordeaux-styled red wine.

They are open year round, which is a plus. If you fancy a tour of the vineyard, get there early and on the weekend, because tours are only given at noon on Saturday and Sunday. Might as well go all out and enjoy yourself!

Many More Vineyards

Virginia has many more vineyards worth visiting. These two are great, but no wine tourism tour would be complete without visiting at least a couple more.

One thing you’ll find at Virginia vineyards is hospitality. Expect to have fun and enjoy great wines. It’s a great overall experience. Below I’ve put a link to a Web page on Virginia wine tourism. Take a minute and check it out. Whether you live in Virginia or are just visiting, exploring these vineyards is time well spent.

What Are You Planning For Your Summer Vacation?

According to the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA), travel and tourism generates approximately $1.3 trillion in economic activity in the U.S. every year. That equates to $3.4 billion a day or $148 million an hour (WOW, am I ever in the wrong business!). So if you are like the majority of Americans who are planning to spend your hard earned dollars on a summer vacation, know that planning is the key to a stress-free and enjoyable vacation. Start with the basics - who, what where, when and why - and keep all of the information and associated papers tucked safety in your vacation folder.

Who - The Domestic Travel Market Report states that one in four household trips include children under 18. Parents, are you breaking out in a sweat just thinking about it? It is a known fact that the level of stress during the trip is in direct proportion to the quality of planning done before ever pulling out of the driveway. To start off your vacation right create a travel kit for each child filled with things that will keep the idle minds and hands busy. Fill it with a pad of paper and an activity book, some colored pencils or crayons, stickers, pipe cleaners, small toys or dolls, Colorforms, books, and games. It is always handy too to bring favorite movies to play if the car trip is longer than 3 hours. Plan on visiting the Dollar Store and stock up on cheap “surprises” that you can pull out “in case of emergency”. And don’t forget the snacks; food always calms the savage beast.

What - start your list now of what to bring. Plan to pack at least one outfit for everyday of your vacation. If you mix and match clothing you can get away with taking fewer clothes and still wear something different each day. Stick with the essentials when it comes to toiletries and other items. Over packing is a waste of time and space. To get started visit http://travelwithkids.about.com/od/packinglists/ or do a Google search on “vacation packing lists” to find more resources.

Where - make sure you have an accurate map and directions to your destination. And knowing your travel time if everything goes according to plan is essential for good planning. If you are traveling by car, plan for stops along the way. Attitudes will stay positive if everyone is given a chance to stretch their legs. If traveling by plane or train, ensure that you not only have a confirmed reservation, but that you also have a seat assignment. Check with your hotel before you leave to make sure you fully understand their check-in and late arrival policy.

When - Another statistic from The Domestic Travel Market Report states that weekend travel is more popular than ever, with half of all U.S. adults–nearly 103 million–taking at least one weekend trip per year and 35% of all weekend travelers taking their children with them. Whether it is a long weekend or a week or more of fun in the sun, there are still some things that you need to plan for while you are away. Stop your mail and paper or ask a trusted neighbor or friend to collect it while you are away. Nothing shouts “no one is home” louder than a pile of newspapers or an overflowing mailbox. Invest in timers for lights and the stereo so there is the appearance that someone is at home. And make sure that someone knows how to reach you in the event of an emergency.

Why - Take time to really think about why you are taking this vacation. Is it to sightsee, relax, or visit with friends or relatives? Setting your expectations before you ever head out the door will help you put things in perspective when things don’t go quite as you had planned. Anticipate that something may not go exactly as you imaged, but commit to being flexible so that the trip does not turn out to be a total bust.

While planning might not be the first thing you associate with fun, it is the one thing that will make the difference between a vacation like the Griswold’s (remember National Lampoon’s Vacation with Chevy Chase…yes, now you remember!) and the best vacation you ever had.
