Not All Waterproof Jackets Keep You Dry

There is a huge difference in price in some waterproof jackets and here is why it is not always best to go for the cheaper option. With cheaply constructed waterproof materials such as waterproof coated nylon. It can do a great job of keeping the rainwater off you. But won’t necessarily keep you dry.

Plastic Bag Technology

Have you ever worn a pair of those plastic gloves you get with using heavy peroxides for cleaning and dying hair? When you have finished and take your hand back out. It is sweaty and uncomfortable.

The effect of a low cost waterproof jacket can be similar to this.

Firstly: Condensation from the heat of your body will try to escape the inner lining of the waterproof jacket and will not be able to. Forming into water droplets and soak in to the layers of clothing next to the waterproof jacket

Secondly: Due to the extra heat. Your body will naturally sweat in the aim to cool you down and the Layers of clothes next to your skin will also get wet and uncomfortable.

Extra Negative Effects: When it is also cold as well as raining, because of the moisture trapped in your clothing you can also become cold. Making you sweat more and in turn making your clothes even wetter.

It is not a good idea to get cold when you have wet clothes as this can also lead to hypothermia and pneumonia. Which is a worst case scenario. But especially in mountain conditions. This should be more than enough of a reason for putting you off using a few thick fleeces and a cheap waterproof jacket rather than spending that bit more on a better piece of water proof technology.

Waterproof Jackets with technology such as GORE-TEX and eVent are designed to be breathable meaning not only do you stay dry from any downpour. But the heat can also be released from your body and out through the jacket. Avoiding the negative effects described above.

Keep this information in mind when you are choosing your next waterproof jacket, read the labels and do some research on the technologies listed on the jackets. If you are planning on getting a waterproof jacket. The last thing you want it to do is make you cold and wet.

For a more in depth explanations on making the right choice. See the GO Outdoors guide on Waterproof Jackets.

Air Travel Versus Car Travel

Summer is in its heat of getting that vacation in before the kids go back to school and finding those last minute travel deals that fit your already stretched budget.

Whether you go by air or by car here are some great suggestions:

Be sure you take your sense of humor along, this is so important as things are just not the way they use to be, there are longer lines, more fees and then even more fees, customer service leaves a lot to be desired and that is just the way it is. So the quicker you can find the humor in the situations that arise the sooner it will be more pleasant and fun for you, your family and those around you.

Set your expectations at a lower level, just expect that things are not going to go exactly the way you planned them, look at the adventure in this and just make your plans and write down what was quoted you, who quoted it to you and the instructions that went with that quote and when you run into a situation that needs handling, at least you have the info with you and you are not standing there saying “well someone told me”, you have definite information. Expect to be taken advantage of. That way, you won’t be disappointed.

When you are planning your vacation keep a folder with all of the information and put it in your carry on. Understand that airlines resorts, hotels, rental cars etc etc will be adjusting their fees on a daily basis and just be prepared for that and expect it; if it doesn’t happen to you, then that is a fun gift.

Be really good to yourself, know that your vacation will have twists and turns. Get a good nights sleep and map out your time for relaxed travel and arrival at the airport, be organized and know what you are going to check and be prepared for surprises. Pack snacks, a good book, puzzles books and other items to entertain yourself if there are delays. Create a mental montra to say to yourself to keep you centered and into joy and adventure.

Travel is an adventure so approach it that way, view your whole vacation as an adventure from the planning it to actually taking off on it. When you approach it with type of mentality the getting to the destination and getting home won’t be such a challenge. Include that part in the adventure not just the destination. Don’t book important tours the day of arrival or the next day if at all possible, give yourself some delayed arrival time and that will take a lot of pressure off of you, plan for adventure surprises. Meet the people in line with you, find out where they are from and what their adventure is about.

Travel Auctions - Big Adventure - Big Savings

Encheres de vacances, subasta viajes, travel auctions… Call them what you will, but there’s money to be saved - and fun to be had!

Travel auctions ultimately bring all the excitement of shopping on eBay to the world of travel. You submit your bids, watch the time tick down, and finally, celebrate as you secure your holiday - frequently, for a fraction of what you might have paid.

Who to choose?

The big hitters of the travel auction world include LuxuryLink, Skyauction, and even eBay itself. LuxuyLink’s focus is, as you’d expect given the name, towards the higher end of the scale, while Skyauction and eBay are a mixed bag price-wise.

In travel auctions, the biggest savings tend to be made the further up the price scale you go, as suppliers can cut their (high) margins and still make a profit. And the result is that high-end travel packages can often be snapped up at the last minute for a decidedly more palatable price.

Go International!

The future, though, may just be international. Many of us learnt at least another language at school, and, in day-to-day life, find very little practical use for it. But for the more adventurous, some of the best savings to be had in travel auctions are through non-English sites like (for French speakers) Nouvellefrontieres.fr, or (Spanish, Italian and Portuguese speakers rejoice!) Logitravel.com.

The functionality - the way the travel auction works, essentially - of the sites is often pretty similar, so even if you can’t understand every word, there’s a good chance you can follow the procedure through familiarity.

Research, research, research

One important thing to remember is to make sure you check out the price of what an equivalent package would be if it weren’t in an auction; there’s no point paying for something, after all, on the suspicion that you’re getting a good deal - always double-check the price directly with the hotel.

It’s also never a bad idea to consider how the ‘auctioneer’ is getting their lot. Just as in an auction house, you wouldn’t pay top dollar for an expensive piece of furniture unless you were absolutely certain of its authenticity; so in online travel auctions, you should dig around into a seller’s history.

What kind of savings can you make?

While you obviously shouldn’t be fooled by the $1 starting bid (you’re really not going to get a $5 cruise, no matter where you look!), there are still some mouth-watering savings to be had.

A recent successful bidder on LuxuryLink snapped up a deliciously decadent 7-night package for two on St. Vincent for $2,229 - making a whopping saving of well over $1,000 in the process. Over at Skyauction, cruises regularly go for 100% less than standard under the hammer (so to speak!)

And the savings are no less impressive if you dip your toes in the foreign language travel auction. Nouvelles-frontieres offer a 75% discount as standard on some of their travel auction products. The difference on Logitravel, meanwhile, is frequently up towards half the market price, with a three night Nile cruise followed by four nights in Cairo recently going for €776 (down from €1200).

All in all, then, it’s hard to disagree with the fact that travel auctions are a great way of saving money on your holidays. As long as you set out what you’re prepared to pay beforehand and you hold your nerve, you can sit back and watch the savings roll in… And get a bit of a buzz while you do so!

Disney Cruise Vacations - Entertainment For the Entire Family

Thinking about taking the family on a cruise vacation but you don’t know where to go or what cruise line to travel with? Then consider taking one of the Disney cruises. Disney waves its magic wand and offers you phenomenal attention to detail on their custom-built ships.

Who Are These Cruises For?

Don’t think that Disney World cruises are only for families with young children. They’re great for children of all ages, be they eight or eighty, because the sleek ships are beautiful to behold and there’s a wide variety of activities onboard for everyone. Disney Cruise Line is both elegant and family friendly.

Realistically, when you think of Disney you do think of children. And if you have kids, they will have a ball on a Disney cruise because they will be constantly engaged in games and activities. They will always be occupied in a fun and interesting way.

And when children are safe and secure and having fun, their parents can relax and enjoy themselves. Mom and dad can just kick back and enjoy some well-deserved rest, or they can participate in activities and take pleasure in the entertainment designed specifically for adults.

On top of that, there’s a huge variety of activities that the whole family can participate in which will make a lifetime of memories.

The Disney Ships

With only two ships, the Disney Cruise Line is one of the smallest cruise companies. But they’re reputed to be magnificent vessels that live up to the Disney name. Christened Disney Wonder and Disney Magic, they were both built to high and rigorous standards and have the art-deco flair of ocean liners that sailed the seven seas in the 1920s.

In early 2007, Disney released the news that it had signed a letter of intent with Germany’s Meyer Werft to build two new significantly larger ships to help meet the demand for this well-liked cruise line.

Disney’s ships offer unique touches and innovations that make their cruises highly desirable. For example, guests are rotated through a series of restaurants during every cruise. That way both the surroundings and the food are unique every day. In addition, specialty restaurants are optionally available.

Oversized Cabins

One of the great things about going on a Disney cruise is that you will enjoy large, luxurious cabins with a bath-and-a-half. The cabins are about 25% larger than what you would stay in on other cruise lines.

And, over 70% of the cabins have either a veranda or a porthole so you can gaze out at the ocean while you’re cruising to the Bahamas, the Mexican Riviera, or enjoying one of the Disney World Caribbean cruises.

Activities Galore

When you’re on a Disney cruise you might feel like you’re at a theme park. Both ships have four different theme restaurants, a retail shopping pavilion, a movie theater, and a Broadway-style theater that offers live entertainment for the adults.

Plus, there’s a spa that’s over 9,000 square feet, three swimming pools, and over 15,000 square feet of space that is totally devoted to entertaining the children.

Cape Canaveral is Disney’s home port. Being only about one hour from Disney World, many families fly into nearby Orlando and combine the cruise with a visit to Disney World.

Cruising the Nile on the Sun Boat IV

Exploring Egypt has been high on the wish list of many intrepid travelers throughout the years. After all, what could be better than seeing for yourself the beauty and grandeur of the Pyramids, the mysterious and haunting Sphinx, and being up close and personal with the treasures of King Tut’s tomb? But one of the best ways to explore Egypt is to get out of Cairo, and cruise the Nile; which is exactly what I did on my last trip to Egypt. And for this enchanting experience I booked passage on the fabulous Nile cruiser: Abercrombie & Kent’s Sun Boat IV.

This gorgeous boat was fully renovated in 2006 and is considered a 5 star “lodging.” With a capacity of only eighty guests (36 cabins plus 4 suites) it is intimate and elegant - a cruiser’s dream transportation.

The trip began in Cairo, and after several days of touring in and around the city, my small tour group was flown south to Luxor. After visiting the fabulous Temple of Karnak, we boarded our floating hotel. Sparkling white, sleek and glorious - the boat was easily the most impressive craft at the crowded dock. And it became immediately apparent that the staff was just as top notch as the boat herself. When we stepped on board, the staff already seemed to know everyone’s names, and could tell you your cabin number while barely glancing at paperwork. Queen Cleopatra thought she had it good? She would have been green with envy at the royal treatment we all received. The words - “your every wish is my command” - are appropriate here.

The boat’s interior is classy and elegant. And the stylish cabins are a delight. I’ve been on several cruises, and these cabins are, hands down, the best I’ve seen: perfectly laid out for maximum functionality, and handsomely decorated. When booking, you have a choice between a cabin with a king bed, or two twin beds. And if you really want to splurge, there are two Royal Suites, each with its own balcony, that are located on the Promenade Deck. Additionally, there are two Presidential Suites which are located on the Main Deck. The rest of the thirty six Luxury Cabins are located throughout the cruiser’s four decks. All cabins are air conditioned, have large picture windows, satellite televisions with in-house movies, safes, mini-bars, and direct dial international phones.

The bathrooms are quite tiny; but then I’ve never been in a ship’s bath that I’d describe any other way. But again, they are very well designed. They have rather petite-sized showers, plentiful bath linens, hairdryers, and an added bonus: they sport Molton Brown bath products. Definitely a lovely and luxurious touch!

The Sun Boat IV carries very experienced Egyptologists on board (the one assigned to lead your group, and others hired for those traveling privately.) My group, after settling in our cabins and having lunch, was whisked off with our Egyptologist to visit the Valley of the Kings (including the Tomb of Tutankhamun) and the Valley of the Queens. Once back on the boat, our day ended with a very civilized evening of cocktails with the Captain, and our first dinner in the Sun Boat IV’s dining room.

And for those who think food is the most important part of any experience (or at least up there in the top three) rest assured, the food is marvelous. Besides being delicious, it is beautifully presented by a stellar wait staff. The polite and friendly waiters will also assist in wine selections, from a list featuring both local and international wines.

Meals on board the boat are definitely not an afterthought. It was obvious that great care had gone into menu preparation (traditional Egyptian dishes are featured at different meals;) and the wide selection of buffet items (for breakfasts and lunches) was nothing short of inspiring.

The Sun Boat IV was our home as we cruised to Qena, Edfu, then on to Aswan. And while the boat is tiny in comparison to ocean cruisers these days; it has all the amenities and activities of its much larger cousins: lectures, afternoon teas, a special “Egyptian Night” party with dinner, dancing and traditional entertainment, and of course, the formal gala dinner.

Besides the dining room, the Sun Boat IV has lovely public areas. There is a charming bar and lounge area, and also two sun decks. The upper sun deck is the picture of casual elegance, with plush divans and chaise lounges and a small plunge pool. Also on the boat, there is a small exercise room, as well as a library and games area, and a gift shop.

We were all rather sad to leave the Sun Boat IV; and the only complaint I heard (which I heartily agreed with) was that we didn’t have enough time to enjoy the boat itself. But then, there’s always next year!

Disney World Cruises

More people are going on cruises. If you think that this is just for couples, think again because Disney World cruises promises to make this a fun filled vacation for the entire family.

Disney world cruises set sail to the Bahamas, the Caribbean and Mexico. Since these destinations are quite close to the mainland, most of these last for just a few days.

Most packages last 8 days and 7 nights with the first 3 days at the amusement park before you get to board the ship. Those who want to stay longer can avail either of the Mediterranean or transatlantic adventures as well.

Unlike other cruises liners, Disney World is quite new in the business and they only have 2 vessels. These are namely the Wonder and the Magic. Both of these have similar features and amenities on board that can hold 2400 guests each. There are plans to add two more ships to the fleet that can hold about 4,000 passengers by 2011 or 2012.

Each night on board one of these ships promise to be different because guests will experience a rotational dining system. This means you will get to eat in one of three dining rooms nightly while most only offer this in one large room.

Meals are already included in the package so the only thing you have to spend for will be drinks. You can avoid this by bringing some on board for the entire trip.

Despite the large number of passengers, you will notice that the state rooms and suites are not cramp making it possible to hold 5 passengers.

There are many things to do on board and to help you out, they have counselors that plan games and other activities. For those who want to spend some time away from the kids, you can ask the crew to assign someone to babysit them.

Given the popularity of Disney World cruises, customers are advised to book their trip at least 6 months in advance. On the day of your departure, make sure you are there at least 2 hours before because they make it a point to leave on time. If you miss your boat, they will try to make arrangements for you to meet up at the port where the ship will be docking. Should there be weather problems, the trip will be rescheduled at a later date.

One thing you should keep in mind when you go for a Disney World cruise or any other is to bring your passport. You are leaving US territory and you have to show this to the customs agent when you make a port call.

What To See And Do In Yellowstone National Park

Whether you are looking to pack into some virgin back country to experience nature in its most base form or cruise in style and comfort in your RV while you take in awe inspiring sights, there is no better place then Yellowstone National Park to do it in. This is the only place in the United States where you will find the North American Bison and the Grey Wolf returned to their natural habitat. This means that it is the only place in the U.S where you will find a natural and authentic ecosystem just as you would have found it five-hundred years ago.

Of course, not everyone is interested in getting up close and personal with a Grey Wolf and this is why it has excellent accommodations for anyone who just wants to relax and spend some time in the great out doors. Yellowstone is treasure of natural wonders that are easily accessible for anyone that chooses to go there and take in their sights. Of course, Old Faithful has been keeping a reliable schedule for centuries now and will for sure still be there when you arrive but there is so much more then that in Yellowstone National Park.

The Teton Wagon Train makes it so easy to step back in time and see the sights and smell the smells that the first pioneers experienced as they opened the frontier of North America. Snake River kayak and canoe excursions can be easily booked that will take you and your whole family on a once in a lifetime river adventure that you are sure to never forget. For adrenalin junkies, there are wintertime snow mobile tour packages that are sure to short circuit anyones pace maker if your up to the challenge.

Then of course, if you just want to take it easy and spend some time fishing and relaxing around the lodge you can take in the luxury accommodations at the Resort of Paws Up. The resort at Paws Up combines a wilderness experience with first rate accommodations for a unique experience that can only be had at Yellowstone National Park. No other national park offers so much to see and do and so many options in how you experience it. You can spend your whole lifetime exploring and experiencing this national treasure and see and do only a fraction of all that is there is.

Selecting an Internal Frame Backpack

The most important piece of gear for backpacking is your backpack. You carry it around with you, and it performs the crucial task of carrying your gear for you! That is why getting the best type and fit is important. The fit is not the only consideration to think about, though. You also need a backpack that is built right, and has the features you need for the type of backpacking you are planning. Here is a list of backpack features you should consider when selecting your backpack.

The most popular structure for the backpack is the internal frame backpack. There are several reason for this. First of all, they are smaller than the alternative external backpack. Also, they fit closer to your body, which makes them more comfortable. The combination of this smaller size and snugger fit generally makes them easier to carry. External frame backpacks seem to throw people off balance more often, perhaps because they seem more rigid, making falls more common.

Here are several of the more popular features of internal frame backpacks:

1) Internal frame backpacks have removable straps. These often come in handy for other purposes, such as to carrying your sleeping bag, mattress or other items.

2) They have a double lining. Internal frame backpacks have an additional interior lining. What this does is helps carry the weight of the gear, and that helps relieve the bottom of stress. A side-affect of this is that it helps your pack last longer.

3) They hug closer to the body without being bulky. This is very important if you are backpacking off trails. The thinner profile aids your moving through tight spots without getting caught on something.

4) Double zipper closures. These are great when you have unexpected zipper breakage or jamming. With two zippers you can save yourself having to figure out how to close the pocket so you do not lose contents as you walk. (Where is that duct tape when you need it!)

5) Load lifter straps. These allow you to shift the backpack weight from shoulders to hips, and vise versa for better balance and comfort.

Other extra features are nice to have. They can help you out in tough situations or help make the backpack more comfortable. Fit is the primary concern in choosing a backpack, but certainly isn’t the only thing to think about. Unless you are looking for a barebones backpack, you will want to check out all the features available. Keep in mind that like most other things, you get what you pay for. The more you spend on and internal frame pack, the higher quality, better durability, and more features it will have.

Trevor is a lifelong hiker, camper and backpacker, and writes often for http://www.enjoybackpacking.com There are also more internal frame backpack ideas on that site.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a type of insurance that is meant to cover possible losses that may occur while the insured person is traveling, may it be domestic or internationally. Like all the other categories of insurance, travel insurance also comes in varying packages depending on the various factors like the entity that will be providing the insurance, the classification of the individual these entities will be catering insurance to as well as the package or degree of insurance these individuals would wish to avail of. By doing so, travel insurance becomes available for all sorts of travelers.

Unlike other insurance programs, however, travel insurance is usually established and arranged at the time when the individual purchases a travel service, possibly by plane or by ship. In most traveling agencies and institutions, a small travel insurance fee is usually included in the over all purchase of the travel service to make sure that all their passengers are covered in case of emergencies. But most insurance packages like these only cover the period when the individual in question is traveling via the plane, bus or ship of the cruise line or tour operator giving the insurance, which is why the fee is relatively small to its longer lasting counterpart.

On the other hand, more continuous travel insurance can be bought by the conventional insurance companies. Although these can also be provided by cruise lines or air lines for the convenience of the passenger, the usual insurance companies are the ones that are the ones that cover all instances when the beneficiary is traveling.

In any case, traveling individuals should not overlook or underestimate the value of securing insurance prior to traveling. Most people prefer to travel without purchasing insurance since they intend to save additional expenses, but the possibility of incurring losses during trips can only become the worst case scenario for them. On the other hand, other people just buy travel insurance without clearly looking into them and usually just end up not making the most out of it when the need arises. This usually happens because people are contented with the cheapest offers.

General advice when deciding to avail of travel insurance is to browse for various insurance offers rather than choosing to travel without one. This means looking through the insurance policies, what it covers and up to how much the person in question in insured for. Travel insurance may cost a little bit extra, but consumers are advised to take a look at how much one can save and be saved when the unavoidable need to do so comes.
